Schloss Kittlitz

Schloss Kittlitz is a castle on the eastern edge of Löbau with a distinctive mansard roof set within landscaped grounds. It now functions as a community center and administrative hub that hosts local events and provides spaces for various organizations.

The building began as a German fortified settlement in 1071 on the site of an earlier Slavic stronghold. In the 15th century it was substantially rebuilt by the Nostitz family, which gave it the shape we see today.

The name reflects the original Slavic settlement that once occupied this land, and the architecture shows how German and local building traditions merged over time. Visitors can see this cultural blend in the design choices and layout of the rooms.

The castle is easy to reach on foot and sits within a well-maintained park that invites exploration. Since it serves as an active administrative center, opening hours are limited and visits should be arranged in advance.

The complex contains underground passages that once connected different parts of the former water castle and reveal how the medieval defensive system worked. These hidden corridors show the sophisticated security measures that were standard in that era.
