Viereckschanze

The Keltenschanze is a Celtic fortification near Gauting with a rectangular layout, surrounded by two parallel trenches on elevated terrain. The structure spans across a plateau and demonstrates the architectural planning of an early European settlement.

This site dates to the late La Tène period between 500 BCE and the start of the common era, when Celtic groups inhabited Bavaria. It demonstrates how these peoples settled in the region and constructed their fortifications.

This location served as an important center for trade and craft activities, as evidenced by pottery and jewelry discoveries. These objects tell the story of everyday life among the Celtic people who lived and built their community here.

The site is accessible via walking trails and well marked, with parking available at the edge of Gauting. The best time to visit is during warmer months, when trail conditions are optimal and the surroundings are easy to explore.
