Teufelssee, Glacial lake in Grunewald Forest, Berlin, Germany
Teufelssee is a glacial lake within Grunewald forest, formed during the Ice Age as part of a chain with neighboring lakes. The water is surrounded by woodland and has designated swimming areas alongside protected sections marked by buoys.
The lake formed during the last Ice Age when glacial meltwater carved channels through the landscape. A waterworks was built in the 1800s on its eastern bank and was later repurposed for environmental education.
The building on the eastern shore now houses an environmental education center where visitors learn about the forest's ecosystems. The place has become an important destination for people wanting to understand and appreciate the woodland landscape.
The southern shore provides a swimming area with basic facilities for visitors who want to cool off. The forest path around the water is easy to walk and offers several entry points for exploring.
Since the 1980s, groundwater from one of the last remaining deep wells of the old waterworks keeps the lake filled and revives previously dried-out marshes around it. This system shows how industrial infrastructure today can actually protect nature.
