Leipziger Turm, Medieval defense tower in Halle (Saale), Germany
The Leipziger Turm is a medieval defensive structure in Halle (Saale) built with thick stone walls measuring about 2.80 meters at the base. It rises 44 meters high and contains window openings in its upper sections that reflect the original Gothic construction style.
The structure was built in the mid-15th century next to the Galgtor gate and served as a watchtower to detect external threats and fires early. In 1573, it received a Renaissance dome with four roof dormers and a copper lantern.
The tower displays Gothic features visible in its masonry and window shapes that remain recognizable today. These architectural elements make it a distinctive landmark within the old town district.
The tower is located at the intersection of Leipziger Street between the marketplace and the main train station, making it easy to reach on foot. Its central position makes it a practical reference point when exploring the old town.
The structure features a clock mechanism with two faces that has marked the rhythm of city life for centuries. This functional element connects the tower's practical role to its presence in the daily lives of residents.
