Mariä Verkündigung, Church building in Mindelheim, Germany.
Mariä Verkündigung is a Baroque church in Mindelheim, located at the western end of the old town on Maximilianstrasse near the Lower Gate. Inside, a large altar wall spans the entire eastern end of the choir, and the decoration follows the style typical of Southern German Baroque with curved forms and detailed ornamental work.
The church traces its origins to a Wilhelmite monastery founded in 1250, which became an Augustinian monastery a decade later. The Jesuits later took over the building and shaped it into one of the main religious centers of the town.
The church's nativity display is one of the oldest of its kind in the region, featuring hand-carved life-size figures set up each year in the choir during Advent. Many visitors come to Mindelheim specifically during the winter season to see these figures up close.
The church sits in the old town of Mindelheim and is easy to reach on foot from the town center. It is worth checking opening times before visiting, as access depends on the schedule of religious services.
The Mindel River runs directly beneath the sacristy and choir, meaning part of the building was constructed over flowing water. This is something most visitors walking through the church would never guess just by looking at the floor.
