Mariä Verkündigung, Church building in Mindelheim, Germany.
Mariä Verkündigung is a Baroque church in Mindelheim with a grand altar wall spanning the entire eastern section of the choir. The interior features typical characteristics of Southern German Baroque style with ornate details and balanced proportions.
The church originated from a Wilhelmite monastery founded in 1250, which was converted to an Augustinian monastery in 1260. Later the Jesuits took over the building and developed it into an important religious center for the town.
The Christmas nativity display, established in 1618, features 80 hand-carved life-size figures shown annually in the choir during winter celebrations. These figures are central to the town's religious traditions and draw many visitors during the holiday season.
The church is located at the western end of the old town near the Lower Gate on Maximilianstrasse. Visitors should check current opening hours in advance, as regular religious services determine access times.
The Mindel River flows directly beneath the sacristy and choir room, making it an integral part of the building's foundation. This natural feature was considered during construction and makes the church a unique example of how architecture adapted to its surroundings.
