MetaHaus, Heritage industrial building in Charlottenburg, Germany
MetaHaus is an industrial building on Leibnizstrasse and Niebuhrstrasse in Charlottenburg and features a steel frame construction with red clinker brick facades. The structure is organized around an inner courtyard, which was later partially covered with an additional roof.
The building was constructed between 1928 and 1929 by architect Hans Heinrich Müller and served as an electrical power station supplying the Charlottenburg district. It ceased operating in this capacity after 1984.
The building displays the design language of 1920s Berlin through its clean lines and contrast between steel frame and red clinker brick. This combination was typical of industrial structures that valued both function and craftsmanship during that period.
The building underwent major renovation between 1999 and 2001 and now houses office spaces and design studios. Visitors should note that access may be limited since it functions as a private office building.
The inner courtyard roof was not sealed off completely but designed with a special structure that allows natural light to enter the central area. This solution preserves the original openness of the industrial site while enabling modern office use.
