Metropol-Theater, Independent theater in Freimann, Germany
The Metropol-Theater is a theatre in the Freimann district of Munich, housed in a former cinema building from the 1950s with around 160 seats. An attached café, which also hosts events with public figures, is part of the venue and opens before and after performances.
The venue was founded in October 1998 by director Jochen Schölch, who converted a disused cinema into a working theatre. The building's post-war design was largely kept during the conversion and remains visible today.
The Metropol-Theater is known for productions that address social topics in a direct and accessible way, drawing in audiences from the neighborhood and beyond. The attached café encourages conversation after shows, making the visit feel more like a gathering than a night out.
The Metropol-Theater is in the Freimann district of Munich and is easy to reach by public transport. Because the hall is small, booking ahead is a good idea, especially for popular shows.
Two of the theatre's productions were selected for the International Shanghai Arts Festival, which is rare for a house of this size. This recognition abroad brought the work to audiences far outside Munich.
