Obere Illerbrücken, Railway and road bridges in Kempten, Germany.

Obere Illerbrücken consists of two parallel structures crossing the Iller River, each carrying different types of traffic. The northern bridge handles road transport, while the southern one carries railway lines.

Built between 1904 and 1906 by the Royal Bavarian State Railway, these structures replaced an older wooden bridge that was no longer adequate. The project responded to growing transport needs in the region.

The bridges form part of Kempten's transport structure and show how the city organized both road and rail traffic side by side in one location. Walking or traveling past them, you see how two vital pathways of a city coexist within the same space.

The bridges are accessible to public traffic, providing an important crossing for both cars and train passengers. It is worth viewing the structures from both sides of the river to fully appreciate their parallel arrangement.

These bridges rank among the largest stamped concrete structures ever built worldwide, employing a three-hinged arch design. This construction method was an innovative solution for such large spans at the turn of the 20th century.
