The Obere Illerbrücken consists of two parallel bridges spanning the Iller River, with the northern section serving road traffic and the southern part carrying railway lines.
Built between 1904 and 1906 by the Royal Bavarian State Railway, these structures replaced an older wooden bridge that no longer met transportation requirements.
The bridges represent early 20th-century German engineering achievements and remain protected architectural monuments within the Bavarian cultural heritage system.
The northern bridge carries four lanes of the Schumacherring ring road, while the southern bridge maintains rail connections on the Kempten-Neu-Ulm railway line.
These structures rank among the largest stamped concrete bridges constructed worldwide, featuring a three-hinged arch design with a height of 36 meters.
