Oberes Schloss is a four-wing castle structure in Arnstorf with a rectangular courtyard at its center. Water-filled ditches on three sides of the building create a defensive barrier that remains a distinctive feature of the complex.
The von Closen family transformed the original water fortress from the 15th century into a noble residence during the 16th century. This conversion gave the structure its current character as an aristocratic dwelling.
The chapel of St. Katharina in the northeast wing displays ceiling frescoes painted by Melchior Steidl in the 18th century. These artworks give the prayer room an ornate character that visitors can still appreciate today.
Access to the interior requires advance booking, so plan ahead if you want to see the rooms inside. The economic courtyard and surrounding park sections are open to the public without reservation.
A private theater was built inside one of the ceremonial rooms during the 19th century. This stage addition was an unusual feature for a noble residence of that era.
