Opel-Zoo, Zoo in Kronberg im Taunus, Germany
Opel-Zoo is a zoological garden in Kronberg im Taunus, Germany, displaying over 1600 animals from 200 species across 27 hectares in naturalistic habitats. The grounds divide into different zones organized by geographic regions or animal groups such as African savanna, forest creatures, and domestic breeds.
Georg von Opel founded the park in 1956 on land that previously belonged to his family estate in the Taunus. The facility grew over the following decades through new enclosures and participation in international breeding programs for threatened species.
The park carries the name of the Opel industrial family who opened the Taunus grounds to the public. Visitors can walk among free-roaming goats in an accessible enclosure and watch feeding sessions at several points throughout the grounds.
The grounds open daily from 9 AM and paths accommodate wheelchairs throughout the site. An on-site restaurant offers meals during the entire day, and several rest areas invite visitors to pause along the route.
The facility houses the only elephants in Hesse and features a modern elephant house built in 2013. In a separate area, visitors can observe giraffes at eye level from a raised platform.
