Burgruine Ratzenried, Medieval castle ruins in Ratzenried, Germany.
Burgruine Ratzenried is a medieval castle ruin located near Argenbühl with remnants of walls, towers, and connected building structures. The site shows multiple layers of construction and can be explored on foot from several angles.
The castle began as a 12th-century structure and was expanded significantly by a local family generations later into a major complex. In the 1600s the site suffered severe destruction from which it never fully recovered.
The Heimatverein Ratzenried organization has dedicated over 10,000 volunteer hours since 1983 to preserve and restore these historical remains.
Visit during daylight hours and use the walking paths to move between different sections of the ruins. A nearby parking area provides a convenient starting point for exploring the site.
The Humpiß family transformed this structure into the largest ministerial castle in Allgäu through extensive renovations costing 11,000 gulden in the early 1500s.
