Burgruine Praßberg, Medieval castle ruin near Wangen im Allgäu, Germany
Burgruine Praßberg is a medieval castle ruin near Wangen im Allgäu featuring a square ground plan and an intact tower. The site preserves thick walls and the characteristic structure of a high medieval fortification.
The Abbey of St. Gallen founded the castle in 1123 as a fortified structure. Control passed between noble families until the site was abandoned in the early 19th century.
The site once held the St. George Chapel, documented from 1414 onward and standing until 1970. It reflects how people at this location practiced their faith and maintained local architectural traditions.
The ruins are accessible by foot through paths starting from the old Praßberg mill area and involve a moderate uphill walk. The site sits in forested and open terrain, so seasonal conditions like mud or overgrowth should be considered.
The tower preserves its original entrance positioned high above ground level, a rare surviving example of medieval defensive design. This construction method made the structure difficult to access for intruders.
