Saurierfährten Münchehagen, National Geotope in Münchehagen, Germany.
Saurierfährten Münchehagen is an open-air museum in Lower Saxony displaying original dinosaur footprints preserved in sandstone from an ancient riverbed. The site features life-size dinosaur models positioned along walking paths to illustrate the diverse species that once inhabited this area.
The fossil tracks were accidentally discovered in 1980 during a firefighting exercise and date back to the Jurassic period, about 140 million years ago. The area was then a shallow river delta with tropical climate where various dinosaurs left their imprints in the soft sediment.
The Museum within Museum section displays outdated dinosaur models to demonstrate the evolution of scientific understanding regarding these prehistoric creatures.
The site is accessible via paved pathways and includes covered areas to protect from rain. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection or rain gear depending on the season.
The site displays footprints from both massive plant-eating sauropods and smaller meat-eating theropods side by side. This variety allows visitors to directly compare the different body sizes and ways these animals lived.
