Schloss Trockau

Schloss Trockau is a three-story stone castle near Pegnitz with an irregular quadrilateral layout. The estate is surrounded by gardens, secondary buildings, and multiple gates that create a complex spatial arrangement.

The castle originated in the 13th century as a medieval fortress under the Lords of Trockau. Between 1769 and 1779, it underwent major reconstruction following war damage, transitioning from a defensive structure to its current residential form.

The chapel within the grounds served as the spiritual center for the families who lived here over the centuries. Visitors can observe how this religious space shaped daily routines and family traditions at the castle.

The castle is a private estate with limited public access, though the exterior can be viewed from the surrounding area. It is located near Pegnitz and can be reached by local roads or hiking paths in the region.

The 18th-century transformation by Karl Ludwig Kasimir Wilhelm Groß von und zu Trockau was remarkably comprehensive and served as a model for similar estate renovations. His vision shifted the castle from a defensive stronghold to a comfortable family residence with all the amenities of contemporary living.
