Zwergenhöhle bei Hollenberg, Natural cave near Pegnitz, Germany

The Zwergenhöhle near Hollenberg is a natural cave in the mountains near Pegnitz with a passage system extending roughly 97 meters into the rock. The system features two parallel main corridors linked by several connecting tunnels and can be entered from two separate locations.

The cave system was formally registered in the cave registry of the Franconian Alps as designation D 87, documenting its significance as a geological feature. It lies beneath the ruins of Hollenberg Castle and thus forms part of the historically documented natural formations of this mountain region.

The cave serves as a focal point for hikers exploring the Franconian Switzerland region and has become woven into local outdoor traditions. People regularly visit this site to experience the natural landscape and mountain passages of the area.

Visitors should bring a flashlight to explore the illuminated sections and various branch passages within the cave. Access is restricted from October through March to protect bat hibernation during the winter months.

The cave has two separate entrances and features a maze of narrow branches, particularly in its northern and western sections. These branching passages turn each exploration into a small adventure of discovery through the mountain interior.
