Schloss Welda

Schloss Welda is a Baroque castle located between Warburg and Volkmarsen, featuring elaborately decorated interior spaces. The estate includes an orangery built during the mid-1700s and a large baroque garden.

Construction took place between 1734 and 1736 under architect Justus Wehmer, who also worked on Hildesheim cathedral. The baroque garden was later shaped by Carl Hatzel and became a defining feature of the estate.

Today the castle functions as a registry office and hosts weddings and concerts within its rooms. This active use has helped keep the building alive and connected to the community.

The grounds are best explored on foot, allowing easy access to the gardens and orangery. Since the castle regularly hosts events, it is worth checking ahead to see if open visits are available.

The castle preserves its original baroque ceiling paintings, offering insight into 18th-century German artistic techniques. These painted ceilings are rarely this intact and demonstrate the skilled craftsmanship of the period.
