Burg Calenberg, Medieval castle in Warburg, Germany.
Burg Calenberg is a stone castle situated on a hilltop in the Calenberg district of Warburg with a main building connected to newer structures and a tall stair tower. The estate features manicured gardens and tree-lined slopes that contribute to the overall appearance of the historical property.
The castle was built around 1250 by the Lords of Berkule and passed to the Westphalian family von Papenheim in 1307 following a grant from the Bishop of Paderborn. During the 1800s it underwent major renovations that shaped its present form.
The castle became a regional landmark following its restoration in the early 1900s. Visitors can observe how medieval structures blend with later romantic design elements that define the building today.
The grounds are easy to explore on foot via pathways and offer good views of the surrounding area from the elevated position. The property is accessible and allows visitors to walk through the different areas at their own pace.
A merchant named Hugo Schuchard purchased the estate in 1868 using wealth from his business in Valparaíso, Chile and renamed it Neu Calenberg. This South American connection forms an unusual chapter in this Westphalian castle's story.
