Schloss Wellenburg, Renaissance château in Augsburg-Bergheim, Germany.

Schloss Wellenburg is a Renaissance château located in Augsburg-Bergheim, perched on a wooded ridge overlooking the Wertach Valley. Three round towers connected by substantial walls define its triangular structure and distinctive silhouette.

The castle was rebuilt in the 16th century under merchant Jakob III. Fugger, who acquired it in 1595 and commissioned the outer gate. This acquisition marked the beginning of Fugger family ownership, a connection that continues to the present day.

The chapel dedicated to Saint George holds medieval sculptures, including a life-sized figure carved in the late 15th century and a crucifix from the early 14th century. These pieces reflect the spiritual importance of the site across different periods.

The castle has been private property of the Fugger-Babenhausen family since 1595 and remains closed to public visitors. A two-kilometer tree-lined avenue planted with linden trees in 1840 extends from Göggingen toward the castle, offering a scenic walking route through the countryside.

The impressive linden tree avenue was planted in 1840 and contains about 350 trees forming a grand approach from Göggingen to the castle. Today this verdant landmark serves as a popular walking path and often surprises visitors as a hidden gem in the Augsburg countryside.
