Schloss Mirow, Ducal palace on Castle Island in Mirow, Germany
Schloss Mirow is a three-story palace with an H-shaped design located on an island in the Mecklenburg river valley. The central main building with two floors is flanked by three-story wings on both sides, and the attic was converted into usable living space.
Construction began in 1707 under architect Joachim Borchmann and was originally designed as a residential palace for Dowager Duchess Emilie. The project took five years to complete before the finished palace served as the family's principal residence.
The palace served as home to the ruling family and shaped life in the region for centuries. Visitors can observe today how the ruling household lived and what connections it maintained with other European courts.
The palace is located on an island and is reached from the town center via a short walk. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the path to the island goes across meadow trails that can become muddy in wet weather.
The Great Hall was designed in 1711 with elaborate Baroque ceiling work and wall paintings that showcase early 18th-century craftsmanship. Despite numerous changes over the centuries, this room remains one of the best-preserved original spaces in the palace.
