Ruine Lichtenstein, Medieval castle ruin in Neufra, Germany.
Ruine Lichtenstein is a medieval castle ruin that splits into two parts: Vorderlichtenstein and Hinterlichtenstein. Each section displays different stone walls and structural remains that reveal how the castle was organized.
Construction of the castle took place between 1150 and 1180, and the Lichtenstein family used it as their residence starting in 1332. The site was eventually abandoned and has remained a ruin since.
The name comes from the Lichtenstein family who shaped the region. Today visitors walk around the stone foundations and enjoy the views over the surrounding countryside.
The courtyard is accessible for walking and features information signs explaining the layout. Several hiking trails lead to the ruin and make it easy for visitors to find their way.
Vorderlichtenstein was also known as Bubenhofen, a name rarely mentioned today. This old alternative shows how places once had different names depending on who used or owned them.
