Schloss Nossen, Medieval castle in Nossen, Germany
Schloss Nossen is a Renaissance castle perched on a rocky hilltop above the Freiberger Mulde valley with multiple wings and a large hall. The fortress shapes the landscape with its solid masonry and characteristic roof lines.
The fortress was founded in the 12th century as a knight's stronghold and underwent complete Renaissance transformation in the 16th century under Prince Elector August. This building phase shaped its current appearance.
The permanent exhibition tells the story of Saxon noble families Schönberg and Friesen through objects and documents from different periods. Visitors can learn about their lives and their influence in the region.
The castle is located in Nossen at Am Schloß 3 and is easy to reach via the main road. Guided tours can be booked by phone in advance.
In May 1813, Napoleon Bonaparte used the castle as his headquarters during his military campaigns through Saxony. This episode is an important part of the castle's history during the Napoleonic Wars.
