Schloss Schleiz, Medieval château in Schleiz, Germany
Schloss Schleiz is a medieval château in Schleiz that has endured significant changes over centuries. Two towers remain from the original structure and define the historical core of the town today.
The château began as a medieval fortress in the 13th and 14th centuries, then received significant modifications under Heinrich von Reuss around 1500. An 18th-century redesign altered its fundamental form and layout.
The château housed valuable collections of the Princely Reuss family archive and numerous art objects until their destruction during World War II.
The grounds are now managed by the Thuringian Ministry of Interior and house the police station for the Saale-Orla district. Parts of the site may not be freely accessible to visitors.
After a bombing in 1945, local citizens worked to save the towers from complete destruction. The towers received new spires during reconstruction that was finished in 1993, showing how the community fought to keep their history.
