Schloss Schomberg, Classicist castle in Gemmingen, Germany
Schloss Schomberg is a classicist castle with a square floor plan set on a raised foundation, standing two and a half stories tall with seven regularly spaced windows along its east-facing side. The building displays clean geometric forms and design details typical of early 1800s architecture.
Construction occurred between 1820 and 1826 under architect Karl August Schwarz, commissioned by Count Hans Christoph von Degenfeld-Schonburg. The building has remained with the Degenfeld family since its completion.
The name comes from the nearby village of Schomberg. Inside, a circular gallery with a coffered dome impresses visitors, lit by a central staircase topped with a glass dome.
The castle remains privately owned by the Degenfeld family and is closed to the public. Visitors can view the building from outside and explore its landscape setting from nearby Gemmingen.
The castle was deliberately positioned to command views toward Burg Steinsberg to the north and the Eppingen parish church to the south. This careful placement connects the classicist building with the wider historic landscape around it.
