Schloss Seedorf, Renaissance castle in Seedorf, Germany

Schloss Seedorf is a castle featuring neo-Renaissance architecture located on the shores of Schaalsee, distinguished by its symmetrical facade and large windows. Ornate decorative details across the exterior define the character of this lakeside structure.

The building originated as a noble residence and remained in the hands of various aristocratic families including von Seedorf, von Brockdorff, and von Lützow. Ida von Witzendorff acquired the estate in the early 1890s, and agricultural operations there ceased around 1972.

The castle displays architectural preferences uncommon in Schleswig-Holstein manor houses, reflecting the tastes of northern German nobility. Its design stands apart from typical regional building styles of the period.

Today the estate functions as residential apartments and does not offer public visits inside. Its position directly on the lake makes it easily accessible from the outside, where visitors can enjoy walks along the waterfront.

Until 1866, the property held special judicial rights granting owners the power to appoint judges for the local population. This feudal privilege reveals the balance of power that existed in the region at that time.
