Schrofmühle Wegberg-Rickelrath

The Schrofmühle in Rickelrath is a historic mill that grinds grain and presses oil from flaxseed, powered by an undershot water wheel fed by the Mühlenbach stream. The main building dates from the 1800s, while the complex includes several connected structures around it.

The Schrofmühle first appears in written records from 1588 through a court case, showing it was already an established part of the region centuries ago. The main house was built in 1850 and has remained the centerpiece of the site since then.

The name Schrofmühle connects to centuries of milling tradition in this region, and visitors can watch traditional techniques that shaped daily life for countless generations. The way water powers the wheel and operates the machinery demonstrates the craftsmanship that defined the past.

Visits take place in small groups led by guides who speak German and Dutch. Wear sturdy shoes, as the paths around the mill can be uneven and the machinery with moving parts is actively demonstrated during the tour.

This mill is the only working example in the Lower Rhine region that performs both grain milling and flaxseed oil pressing at the same location. This rare double function offers a glimpse into how many village mills once served multiple purposes with the same water power.
