Stöcken City Cemetery, Municipal cemetery in Herrenhausen-Stöcken, Germany
Stöcken City Cemetery is a municipal burial ground in the Herrenhausen-Stöcken district of Hannover, marked at its entrance by a neogothic chapel. The grounds are laid out with planted areas, shrubs, water features, and a number of memorials and monuments spread throughout.
The cemetery opened in 1891 as Hannover's second municipal burial ground. Over the following decades it grew and adapted to serve the city's changing needs.
The cemetery has separate sections for different religious communities, including a dedicated area for Muslim burials that reflects the makeup of the city. Walking through the grounds, visitors can notice how each section has its own layout and character.
The cemetery is open to visitors who want to walk through the grounds and explore the memorials at their own pace. A visit works well at any time of year, though the planted areas look their best in spring and summer.
Near the entrance stand two of the last surviving cast-iron Bödeker Angels, originally placed to honor charitable donations. These figures are among the few remaining examples of this type of funeral art that can still be seen in their original setting.
