Thomasquelle, Natural spring in Mühlhausen, Germany.
Thomasquelle is a natural spring that emerges from a sinkhole surrounded by trees in the middle of a field near Mühlhausen. Water from the spring flows into a reed-covered pond and eventually joins the stream system that leads to the Unstrut River.
The spring was created in 1901 when a sinkhole suddenly collapsed beneath the surface. Over time the hole's depth gradually changed until it reached its stable state in the mid 20th century.
Natural springs in the Thuringian region represent important water sources that have sustained local communities and shaped regional development patterns.
The site is easily accessible on foot and located among fields and wooded areas. Visiting is possible year-round, though drier seasons offer better conditions for walking around the location.
Water output from the spring can swing between abundant flow and periods of complete dryness. This unpredictable variation means each visit offers a different sight depending on water conditions.
