Vogelfreistätte Mittlere Isarstauseen, Nature reserve in Bruckberg and Eching, Germany
This protected area is located along the Isar reservoirs between Bruckberg and Eching, with water surfaces, canals, and riverine forests creating different habitats. A wide dike path runs through the site, offering views of these varied landscapes.
The protected area was officially designated in 1982 to safeguard the bird populations along the Isar. A 1995 regulation strengthened this protection by banning waterfowl hunting throughout the site.
The information stations along the dike path show how this landscape provides habitat for rare bird species and why the river is important for nature. Visitors can directly see how water, forest, and meadows work together.
Access is best by a dike path starting from Eching that extends about 800 meters to an observation tower. Information boards along the way explain the nature and help with orientation.
In winter, the reservoir waters rarely freeze because constant flow keeps them from forming ice. This makes the lakes a critical refuge for water birds across Bavaria when other waters freeze solid.
