Alexander Church, Gothic Protestant church in Zweibrücken, Germany.
Alexander Church is a Gothic church in the center of Zweibrücken, featuring a tall tower, pointed arches, and ribbed vaulting. The interior is laid out as a three-aisle nave and holds a number of stone burial monuments.
The church was built in the late 15th century and served for generations as the religious center of the city. Heavily damaged during World War II, it was rebuilt in the 1950s.
The church was the burial place of the dukes of Pfalz-Zweibrücken for centuries, and several of their tombs are still visible inside. Walking through the nave, visitors come face to face with stone epitaphs and memorial slabs that mark the resting places of the ruling family.
The church sits in the center of Zweibrücken and is easy to reach on foot. Visiting outside of service hours gives more time to look around the interior at your own pace.
Despite the heavy wartime damage, several of the medieval tomb slabs survived and remain in their original positions inside the church. This makes the building one of the few places in the region where this kind of courtly memorial art can still be seen in context.
