Alexandra, Historic steamship in Flensburg, Germany.
Alexandra is a steamship built in 1908 that now serves as a floating museum moored in Flensburg, at the edge of the fjord. The vessel is about 120 feet (37 m) long and roughly 23 feet (7 m) wide, making it one of the oldest preserved steamships in the area.
The ship was built in Hamburg in 1908 and began its life as a passenger ferry on the Flensburg Fjord. During the First World War it served as a patrol vessel, then returned to passenger service once the war ended.
The name Alexandra refers to a Danish princess who was present at the ship's christening. On board, the preserved spaces show how ferry travel looked and felt in the early 1900s.
The ship is moored at Flensburg's harbor and easy to reach on foot from the city center. A visit in dry weather is a good idea, as parts of the ship are on the open deck.
Although the ship is now in Germany, it spent much of its working life crossing between German and Danish shores on the same fjord. This cross-border history reflects the mixed identity of the Flensburg region, where German and Danish cultures have long overlapped.
