Königsburg

Königsburg is a castle ruin perched on a peninsula along the Schlei's southern bank near Kosel. The site displays remnants of inner and outer fortifications, along with a villa erected in the early 1900s.

Danish King Erik of Pomerania founded this fortress in 1415 to monitor shipping on the Schlei. The castle served as a strategic outpost for Nordic control over this coastal region.

The site features in local tales about treasures said to be hidden within its walls. Stories passed down through generations reflect how the fortress captured the imagination of the surrounding community.

Public access to the grounds is limited, so check beforehand if a visit is possible. The best views of the ruins can be seen from outside the private property boundaries.

Stones from the abandoned fortress were later used to repair the church in nearby Rieseby. This demonstrates how medieval structures became material sources after their original purpose ended.
