St. Marien, Romanesque Revival church in Witten, Germany
St. Marien is a Romanesque Revival church in Witten featuring a long nave with pilasters and a striking southern tower with round-arched sound openings. The building sits at Marienplatz 1 and displays the typical architectural language of this style with its distinctive formal elements.
Construction started in 1846 under architect Ernst Friedrich Zwirner and saw expansion in 1895 led by Arnold Güldenpfennig. These two building phases shaped the form you see today.
The building belongs to the Route of Industrial Culture, a collection of religious structures showing how architecture developed across the Ruhr region. Visitors can see how this place reflects the spiritual needs of a growing industrial community.
The entrance provides ramps and modified pathways offering full wheelchair access to all areas inside. People with mobility needs will find easy movement through the building.
The dome contains restored decoration from 1982 that reproduces artistic patterns from the 1920s, showing how historical details were carefully preserved. This restoration connects two different periods in a single artistic statement.
