Bensberger See, Recreation lake in Kippekausen, Bergisch Gladbach, Germany
Bensberger See, also called Saaler Mühlenteich, is an artificial lake in Kippekausen created by a dam structure. The water body is fed by the Saaler Mühlenbach stream and sits near an indoor swimming facility and sports grounds.
The site began as a brown coal mining pit called Consolidation Alfred before the city of Bensberg purchased it in 1966. The excavated area was then flooded to create the recreational lake seen today.
The lake draws local visitors who swim, walk, and play sports along its shores throughout the year. It functions as a gathering place where people escape daily routines and enjoy outdoor leisure time.
The lake sits about 5 kilometers from Bergisch Gladbach city center and is open to visitors year-round. Parking is available near the swimming facility, and walking shoes are helpful for exploring the shoreline and surrounding paths.
The lake functions as a rainwater retention basin, helping manage flood risks for the surrounding area. This dual purpose shows how a recreational space can also serve essential infrastructure needs.
