Established in 1100 as a hilltop fortress, the structure transformed through centuries, serving as a castle, monastery, hospital, and current municipal headquarters.
The 1962 renovation by architect Gottfried Böhm combined medieval restoration with Brutalist design, earning him the Pritzker Prize for Architecture.
The castle grounds include a small parking area and remain accessible via the SB40 train connection from Cologne Main Station.
The concrete observation tower rises above restored medieval structures, creating a distinct combination of 12th-century architecture with modern elements.
