Between 1936 and 1945, this Wehrmacht-commissioned factory manufactured TNT and picric acid, becoming Germany's second-largest TNT production facility during World War II.

The site represents a complex memorial of forced labor conditions, where over 4,000 workers, including many foreign nationals, endured severe manufacturing conditions.

The former factory grounds have transformed into an industrial park called Hirschhagen, hosting various businesses while maintaining restricted access to certain areas.

Several former munitions buildings have been converted into residential houses, creating an unusual combination of bunker-like structures and modern living spaces.
