St. Johannis

St. Johannis, Gothic church building in Luckenwalde, Germany.

St. Johannis is a Gothic church in the center of Luckenwalde featuring two naves with cross-ribbed vaults supported by four octagonal columns made of red brick. The building follows the hall church design typical of late medieval brick construction.

The church was founded in 1170 by Cistercian monks and started as a simple stone structure. It underwent major redesign in the late 1400s to become the Gothic hall church seen today.

The name references St. John the Baptist and remains central to the town's identity today. Visitors recognize the structure immediately by its red brick facade, which reflects the building practices of medieval monastic communities.

Access is available from the town square side and the building is easy to explore on foot. Following comprehensive restoration work completed in 2007-2009, the interior remains in good condition and fully accessible.

The church was built without a bell tower and instead used the separate Market Tower across the square for its bells. This distinctive arrangement reflects how Cistercian building principles shaped the design.
