Stockert Radio Telescope, Radio telescope in Eschweiler, Germany.
The Stockert Radio Telescope is an astronomical observation facility in the Eifel hills near Eschweiler, built around a 25-meter parabolic dish. It sits on a hilltop and is visible from the surrounding area.
The Stockert Radio Telescope was built in 1956, making it Germany's first radio telescope, originally operated by the University of Bonn and the Max Planck Institute. Scientific operations ended in 1995, after which the Astropeiler Stockert association took over and kept the facility running.
The site hosted music festivals called Woodstockert between 1997 and 2004 when organized by Creamware, a digital audio company. This demonstrates how a research facility became a gathering place for cultural events beyond its scientific purpose.
Group tours are offered by the Astropeiler Stockert association and should be arranged in advance. The site sits on a hill, so sturdy footwear is a good idea and warm clothing helps, as it tends to be cooler and windier at the top.
Between 1997 and 2004, the site hosted music festivals called Woodstockert, organized by Creamware, a digital audio company. The name was a direct play on the 1969 festival, turning a scientific hilltop into a concert venue.
