Pyramide Garzau, Stone pyramid in Garzau-Garzin, Germany.
Pyramide Garzau is a structure with a square base built entirely from rough fieldstones and topped with an octagonal dome that rises approximately 14 meters above ground. The construction incorporates the classical entrance portal and sits as a focal point within the larger garden layout.
Count Friedrich Wilhelm Carl von Schmettau commissioned this pyramid in 1784 as part of an extensive garden project he had started in 1779. The structure emerged during a period when landscape gardens featuring unusual buildings were considered an art form.
The structure displays classical features with a reconstructed sandstone entrance framed by Doric elements such as triglyphs and metopes. These details reflect the admiration for ancient Greek architecture that was fashionable among collectors and garden designers of that era.
The exterior grounds are accessible year-round, while events such as guided tours and concerts take place inside according to a regular schedule. Visitors should check if special events are planned, as these offer opportunities to explore the interior of the structure.
Three underground entrances on the northern side lead to vaulted chambers beneath the structure, with the central passage connecting to an enigmatic vault. This hidden underworld was deliberately designed as an integral part of the original plan.
