Ziegelhütte, Artist's house and exhibition venue in Martinsviertel, Darmstadt, Germany.
Ziegelhütte is an artist's house and exhibition space in Darmstadt's Martinsviertel, housed in a three-story timber-framed building with enclosed gardens. The venue between Kranichsteiner Straße and Kastanienallee provides rooms for art exhibitions, workshops, and artist residencies where creators can work and stay.
The building functioned as a brickworks for several centuries before closing in 1972 when production ended. Photographer Pit Ludwig saved it from demolition by converting it into his residence and studio during the 1970s.
The name reflects its past as a brickworks, yet today it serves as a meeting point for international artists and creative practitioners. The space has become a center for contemporary exhibitions and artistic exchange where visitors regularly encounter new works and collaborative projects.
The venue accommodates up to 70 people and works well for smaller exhibitions, gatherings, and artistic projects. The spaces are available year-round and can be flexibly adapted for different kinds of creative activities.
Theater photographer Pit Ludwig was a renowned figure in his field whose decision to inhabit the abandoned building became the turning point for its preservation. His commitment to the property established the foundation for it to serve today as an enduring center for artists and creatives.
