Bessunger Friedhof is a rectangular cemetery featuring traditional grave markers, memorial sculptures, and modern funeral architecture across its maintained grounds. The grounds contain varied burial sections with different types of monuments and vegetation that organize the entire space.
The cemetery was consecrated in May 1839 after being relocated eastward from Klappacher Street at the request of Grand Duke Ludwig II of Hesse. A final expansion occurred in 1970 toward the southwest, creating additional burial space.
The cemetery honors local figures through gravestones, including a sandstone sculpture by Robert Cauer the Younger marking Arnold Mendelssohn's burial site. These monuments show how the community preserved memories of its notable residents.
The grounds are well organized with maintained pathways that lead through different burial sections. Visitors should move respectfully through the space and be mindful of families visiting the graves.
In June 1966, a new memorial hall replaced an open morgue at the southeast corner, modernizing the funeral facilities. This change shows how burial practices and infrastructure evolved over time.
