Hansa-Werke, Former automobile factory in Varel, Germany.
Hansa-Werke is a former automobile factory in Varel with a mansard roof and steel-concrete skeleton structure at the corner of Neumühlenstraße and Hansastraße. The complex sits at Neumühlenstraße 41-45 and shapes the industrial area with its distinctive design.
The factory was founded in 1911 and produced automobiles until 1930. The site had previously hosted ironworks that had operated there since 1842.
The building shows early German industrial design from the early 1900s with elements of objective modernism in its construction. Its form and structure continue to shape the character of this neighborhood today.
The grounds have been vacant since 1996 and were previously used for administrative and military storage functions. Visitors should note that this is an off-limits industrial heritage site.
The facility produced over 10000 vehicles within two decades of operation. This made it the largest automotive manufacturer in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg at that time.
