Hohe Bastei, Sandstone rock formation in Saxon Switzerland National Park, Germany
Hohe Bastei is a sandstone rock outcrop in Saxon Switzerland that rises sharply above the Elbe Valley. A solid sandstone bridge links several separate rock groups together and creates expansive views across the landscape.
An early wooden structure was built in the early 1800s to allow visitors access to the rock formations. The current stone bridge was constructed a few decades later and has been maintained continuously since then.
The site contains ruins of Neurathen Castle, with excavated pottery and artifacts that demonstrate the historical settlement patterns of the Saxon Switzerland region.
The site is accessible on foot from the nearby train station, with the path including stairs and crossing the bridge. Visit during dry conditions to walk safely across the exposed rock sections.
The rock formations developed over millions of years through slow erosion, revealing the layered sandstone patterns of the region. Visitors can observe these geological patterns up close and understand how water gradually shaped the stone.
