Altes Schloss Wallerstein, Medieval castle ruins in Wallerstein, Germany.

Altes Schloss Wallerstein is a castle complex situated on elevated terrain in Bavaria with preserved stone walls, towers, and fortification elements from various building phases. The remains display different construction styles that were added over many centuries.

The site was founded in 1188 and was later expanded as both a military fortress and noble residence. After destruction by Swedish forces during a 17th-century conflict, the terrain was quarried for stone used in constructing a newer castle.

The castle reflects how noble residences evolved over time, transforming from a pure military stronghold into a residential seat for nobility. These changes are visible in the varying construction styles and masonry that visitors can still observe today.

The site is accessible via marked pathways in the town of Wallerstein and features informational panels about the various architectural elements. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the terrain is uneven and rises steeply in places.

After the fortress was destroyed, stone from the rock was systematically extracted and used to build the new castle in the valley below. This material provided the foundation for establishing a new residence directly beneath the old ruins.
