Schloss Burgdorf, Medieval castle in Burgdorf, Germany
Schloss Burgdorf is a castle that rises above the city with half-round towers and a northern wall stretching across the landscape. The stone structures form various buildings surrounding the courtyard, each serving different purposes over the centuries.
The castle came under control of the Dukes of Zähringen in 1080, becoming part of an important southwestern German territory. This marked the beginning of its role as a major fortification in the region.
The Knight's Hall forms the heart of the castle and hosts a museum showing regional history and how the building changed over time. Visitors can see how different periods left their mark on the structure.
The castle opens its doors Wednesday through Sunday, with group tours available upon request. It helps to explore the grounds first on your own before joining a guided tour to understand the layout and its history.
The castle served as a military hospital in the 1800s and later became a school before reopening as a museum and event venue. This transformation shows how fortresses adapted to new times rather than falling into ruin.
