Peine Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Peine, Germany
The castle site features stone foundations and remnants that demonstrate medieval construction techniques used in northern German defensive structures from that period.
Built before 1130, the castle served as a stronghold for Gunzelin von Wolfenbüttel, who established the town of Peine between 1218 and 1220.
The castle remains represent the early development of Germanic fortification systems and the establishment of medieval settlements in Lower Saxony.
Historical documentation and archaeological findings from the castle are preserved in the Peine city archive, managed until 2019 by Michael Utecht.
During the 1950s, workers discovered medieval silver treasures near the castle site, including 14th-century bullion in two separate locations.
