Peine Castle

Peine Castle is a medieval fortress in Peine, Germany, where stone foundations and wall remnants remain visible today. The ruins display the typical construction methods of northern German fortifications, with structural elements designed to serve defensive purposes.

The fortress was built before 1130 and served as a stronghold for Gunzelin von Wolfenbüttel. Under his rule, the town of Peine was founded between 1218 and 1220, growing directly around the castle site.

The castle grounds today tell the story of how a fortress shaped the development of an entire town and region. Visitors can see how medieval power structures influenced where people chose to settle and build their lives.

During the 1950s, workers discovered medieval silver treasures near the castle site, including 14th-century bullion found in two separate locations. These findings reveal that valuable goods were once stored here and suggest the prosperity of the medieval community.
