Japanese garden, Japanese garden in Rheinaue Park, Bonn, Germany.
The Japanese Garden sits within Rheinaue Park in Bonn and combines miniature trees, stone walkways, and two waterfalls near Auensee Lake. The grounds feature a Buddhist pagoda and multiple Bonsai specimens arranged throughout the space.
Dr. Akira Sato created the garden design in 1979 as recognition for Bonn's role in hosting the Federal Horticultural Show. This founding connects the location to the city's significance as a gardening event venue.
The space reflects Japanese design principles through its pagoda and carefully positioned plants that express how Japanese gardening interprets nature. Visitors walk through these arranged elements and experience how the garden embodies a different approach to landscaping.
The garden is open to visitors from 3:00 PM until 8:45 PM with no entry fee. Getting there is straightforward using bus lines 610 or 611, or tram 66 that serve the Rheinaue Park grounds.
The grounds host the Rhein in Flammen fireworks display each May on a specific Saturday evening. This event transforms the location into a special celebration that draws visitors from across the region.
