Hochbunker Poppelsdorf, Concrete air raid shelter in Poppelsdorf, Bonn, Germany

Hochbunker Poppelsdorf is a rectangular concrete structure nestled against the Kreuzberg hillside with three stories and setback upper floors. Two tunnel passages extend into the mountain interior, connecting to the main building that spans multiple levels inside the slope.

The structure was built in 1941 as protection during World War II and sheltered hundreds of people from air raids. After the war ended, it was not demolished but repurposed for a new function.

After the war, the university converted the structure into student housing, and its interior was fitted with small rooms for students. People viewed this place as an unusual alternative to traditional dormitories in the city.

The site sits on a slope, so expect uneven ground and wear sturdy footwear for safe movement. Access is via a path leading to the entrance, and visitors should check ahead about current visiting possibilities.

The outer facade displays a winter landscape mural created in 2022 showing ice skaters in motion. The scene draws inspiration from 17th-century Dutch painting traditions.
