Monument, Installation artwork in Dresden, Germany
Monument is an installation artwork made of three buses stacked vertically in front of the Frauenkirche in Dresden's city center. The unusual arrangement of vehicles creates a striking architectural form that commands attention.
The work was created by German-Syrian artist Manaf Halbouni and references protective bus barriers used in Aleppo starting in 2015 during the civil war. The installation connects Dresden's World War II experiences with contemporary conflicts happening worldwide.
The work references protective barriers used during conflicts and invites visitors to reflect on safety and vulnerability across different eras. Today it stands as a testament to human resilience in times of crisis.
The installation was displayed from February to April 2017 in the square in front of the church and was freely accessible from outside without any admission fee. After that period, the work was moved to Berlin, so it is no longer visible at this location.
A section of the installation featured a special handrail that produced airplane sounds and vibrations evoking the 1945 bombing raids. This sensory experience allowed visitors to feel historical events in a physical way.
