Elbtower, Planned skyscraper in HafenCity, Germany
Elbtower is a proposed architectural structure in Hamburg-Mitte, Germany, located on a triangular plot between the Norderelbe river and the Oberhafen canal. The design features a broad base that narrows upward and ends in a cantilevered top section.
The project emerged after a competition announced by the city in 2017, with the final design presented in 2018. Construction began in 2021 but was interrupted in 2023 after Signa Holding filed for bankruptcy.
The name refers to the nearby Elbe, which has shaped the cityscape for centuries and defines Hamburg as a port city. Once completed, it is meant to serve as a reference point and show visitors where HafenCity begins.
The site sits near Elbbrücken and is easily reached by public transport, with connections to metro and commuter trains nearby. A bicycle bridge crosses the canal, linking the area to surrounding neighborhoods and making it accessible for cyclists.
The exterior was planned to feature a delicate screen of light aluminum profiles, offering sun protection and creating different reflections depending on the light. A special lighting concept was intended to make the building appear as a glowing sculpture at night.
