Esterberg-Alm, Mountain pasture in Garmisch-Partenkirchen region, Germany.
Esterberg-Alm is a mountain pasture at 1,265 meters elevation positioned between Wank, Fricken, and Krottenkopf peaks. A guesthouse at the site serves meals and drinks to hikers passing through the area.
Records first mention this pasture in 1408, when it already served as an important agricultural site. For hundreds of years afterward, herders used these heights for cattle farming.
The name comes from the Esterbach spring, and shepherds manage the pastures where cattle graze year-round. Visitors can observe how local herds use these high meadows as part of regional mountain farming life.
The site is reachable via marked hiking trails from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and welcomes visitors throughout the year. Sturdy footwear and preparation for mountain conditions are necessary for the walk uphill.
A hiking loop of about 8 kilometers circles the Wank peak and passes through quieter trails before reaching the Alois-Huber-House. This route takes walkers through less visited parts of the area.
